The Australian round of the World Rally Championship is held in Coffs Harbour. Fast, flowing roads are what was in store for the world’s best rally drivers and I was on hand with my team to cover the event. Covering an event like this takes a bit of planning, including 4 days spent in Coffs a few weeks earlier to do recon so it would free up time during the event to do other things.
Coming in to the event, Volkswagen still had a stranglehold on both the Manufacturers’ and Drivers’ Championship. This round could prove to be historic for the VW team, as with a strong performance they could clinch back-to-back titles!
Over the course of the four days of competition there were very little incidents. No major accidents happened, which is a rarety in this sport and come the last day Ogier and Latvala were just a few seconds apart chasing down the Rally Australia title.
320km of competitive stages and at the finish line a mere 6.8sec split team mates Ogier and Latvala. To put that in to distance perspective, over 320km of competitive driving there was only a gap of 120m between the two!! Competition is fierce, and the Drivers’ title was still up for grabs.
As i finish this I am jumping on a plane back to Europe to cover France and Spain.
