My good friend Sam was kind enough to remind me about the next track day the Porsche Club of Queensland was holding at Queensland Raceway, so I jumped in mum’s TDI Golf, picked up Foy on the way, and hauled ass all the way to QR. The day was looking pretty miserable, so we grabbed some plastic bags for our cameras just in case it started pouring, but luckily we didnt need them.
We rolled up to Sam and his dad Steve’s pit garage, filled with Sam’s Martini-striped Porka and Grimace, and my jaw dropped. Pulling out of the pits was an assortment of about a dozen cars, easily worth over $3 million – 996s and 997s wearing badges such as 911, Turbo, GT3, GT3 RS, GT2, and even GT2 RS. I flicked the switch and started smashing out some photos!
Who lets a learner driver thrash their Cup car around a circuit?? And the learner was a girl too, awesome to see the ladies getting into it!
Foy was smart enough to remember to wear long pants and sleeves for getting passenger rides.. The lucky bastard even got himself a ride in a friend’s GT3. I frantically looked around for some pants to borrow, but that’s not really as simple as asking someone to borrow a jumper unfortunately, so I decided to focus on getting some nice photos instead.
One of the highlights for me was the number of huge wheels and tyres with concave and dish and fatness of every description.
Old school BBS love.
Centerlock wheels for the track. Hardcore. I saw someone swapping a set of these wheels onto a car, and the guy was hanging off a breaker bar about 2m long!
This black GT3 RS was one of my favourites, and the number of photos I have of it attest to this. The owner was a really nice guy too, and he regaled us with stories of his road trips to Melbourne and beyond, in this very car. How he managed to keep his licence on Great Ocean Rd and Putty Rd in this car, is beyond me.
Inside a GT3 RS. Not a bad place to be.
The carpark wasn’t bad either, with a couple of Lambos added to the mix. This orange Murcielago SV was one of the most hardcore factory cars I’ve ever seen, and the orange was a treat to photograph!
The brakes on this thing. Oh emm gee. Carbon ceramic rotors, and calipers the size of my head. No wait, bigger. Much, much bigger. But then you need that to handle 670hp from a 6.5L V12.
I tried to hit the owner up for a quick shoot, but he wasn’t down, but then again, Im sure people approach him every day, so it wasn’t really surprising. In any case:
One of the most hardcore race cars there, a GT2 with wide body panels, carbon ducting, huge wheels and brakes, everything on this car was extreme. The owner wasn’t having a good day on the track however.
The only way a roof scoop schould be done, hardcore and functional.
I’ve always loved the shape and styling of the Cayman, even though I’ve copped shit for it from the other guys. But whatever. I’d drive one.
The older Porkas didn’t disappoint either, their classic metal graced by more individual and eccentric touches, which just added to their presence. I particularly liked the styling of this extremely clean silver example, with the blood red eyes!
Foy and I ran off to the side to do an impromptu shoot with his friend’s turbo wide body Cayman. The feature is coming up soon, but here’s a teaser to finish off with!
