On my recent trip to Borneo in Malaysia, the boys and I pulled in overnight to a little town up in the jungle-covered mountains called Ranau. As we were riding towards the town centre, I spotted a rad-looking Bug from the side of the road..

Pulling up in front of a car audio/accessory shop, I enquired about who the VW belonged to. Out stepped 18-year-old Dominic, proud as punch! He’s owned the car for 2 years in which time he’s made it completely his. I grabbed him and his car and did a quick, impromptu photoshoot with my mate Brad’s manual focus camera set to JPG, using the live view. Talk about being out of the comfort zone!

The thing that really grabbed my attention from the road were the 19×10″ Weds Kranze wheels and ride height lowered at the front with a 2.5″ drop spindle and lowered springs at the rear. Very unexpected in this part of the world!

When faced with the plethora of Protons, Peroduas and battered old Corollas, Dom opted to purchase the vintage Bug because of its beautiful lines and provenance.

Working hard, he’s personalised a few things both in the interior..

Always great to meet other enthusiasts, even when the only common language you speak is cars!
