Big V8s, methanol and burnt rubber. They say all good things come in threes! Powerplay brought all that and then some to Queensland for this year’s February Powerplay extravaganza.
Myself and Maice found ourselves travelling out to Queensland Raceway in the early hours of Saturday morning to cover the event for DS. Upon arrival we quickly realised that this event had some serious cars in play: everything from ordinary street cars to purpose built drag cars sharing the singular goal of having fun. Powerplay is the younger brother of Powercruise, and it is a single day for all petrolheads to pull their 500+hp cars out from under the covers and let loose down the straights of QR in a safe and enjoyable environment.
Without further adieu here is our coverage from the day.
As we wondered around through the pit area ridiculous cars kept appearing out of every nook, cranny, shed and corner, including Gareth’s absolutely mental 13B turbo RX2 which had the engine completely removed 4 days prior to the event for a full rebuild.
Another car which caught our attention was this immaculate track inspired Shelby Cobra Replica which left many people thinking twice as it pulled away from some of the most serious cars.
8am rolled around and the cars were lining up all eager to get onto the track.
Even a Transformer made the trip down which proved to be popular with all the kids.
It wasn’t long until you had cars lining up and racing down the straights, always followed by the lingering smell of cancer, also known as burnt rubber.
Unfortunately for some is was a little more than just a smell of burning rubber following them, as this Trans-Am soon found out.
The attention to detail and unique engineering on some of the cars was simply breathtaking.
The Drift Syndicate boys were out and about and as always put on a good show for the spectators.
Falcon uses Smoke Screen…. It was super effective.
Along with the expected Australian and American muscle there were also a good mix of European and Japanese cars both new and old.
The main event of the day was without a doubt the Street Outlaws $500 buy in competition, inspired by the American TV show. This was were the men where separated from the boys as they threw it all on the line for a single run.
Bringing a real thrill to the event was Team Hotwheels with their drift cars running tandems around big track and the stunt team doing some unbelievable things on both two and four wheels.
Thanks to Powercruise for hosting such an awesome event. We hope you enjoyed our post and stay tuned for more event coverage from us in the future!
