Based this year in Adelaide, Skylines Australia kicked off the Import Monster SAU Nationals on November 21-24. After registration on the Thursday, there was a huge lineup of 3 days’ worth of activities. As people traveled all the way from Victoria and even Western Australia, the merch packs were handed out, and registrations completed before circuit racing commenced on Day 1 at Mallala Motorsport Park.
Friday morning rolled around and everyone was up and out at Mallala. Driver briefings as always were first up, explaining the safety requirements and expectations.
Wondering around the paddock before racing started, I got to admire some of the truly impressive machines about to take part. First up was this mint track spec S14.
He knows what’s up.
With some wild engine packages on display, I was keen to see numbers laid down.
This 240Z was running an RB26 swap with twin Tomei highmounts pushing roughly 330kw.
My favourite car/engine package of the day. Sileighty, tubbed, big RB. Despite being originally set up as a drift car, the owner was looking for grip and set some blistering times.
Naming rights sponsors had set themselves up in prime position to watch the action.
Finally it was time to hit the track.
Here are the Sileighty and 240 whose engine bays were pictures above, ready to hit the tarmac.
There was some fantastic racing with a mixture of cars. Whilst it’s SKYLINE nationals, other makes are certainly not restricted.
I could watch this Sileighty all day. I’m a little biased though.
Speaking of drift cars, Jake ‘Driftsquid’ Jones was out in his drift car, running some AD08s and setting some VERY good times!
Even the exotics came out!
This 32 GTR was beautiful, however his day came to an end with a suspected faulty bearing.
This R32 4 door was also quite high up in my list. Dosing around the track, it made me smile.
Fast… but not the quickest!
Deep into the corner, tyre scrub was noticeable.
Whilst there were no crashes, the day wasn’t without incident. Not too bad though.
So brings us to the end of Day 1 of SAU Nats. Stay tuned for Day 2 – Hillclimb and Day 3 – Show n Shine.
