The Porsche Club of Queensland headed out to Willowbank on this glorious winter Sunday to test their mettle at drags and motorkhana. I wanted to focus on panning and motion shots, so you can expect a lot of that in this set.
There were some pretty impressive machines out, from classic and vintage 911s to latest model 997 GT3s and up.
It was interesting to see that some of the bigger, heavier machines, especially the 997 turbos, didn’t perform all that well around the motorkhana/gymkhana circuit. They seemed to understeer quite a bit, and had trouble getting around the extremely tight corners. Apparently some owners were also having trouble with their handbrakes, which I’ve heard is actually a common weak point for Porsches.
This red 997 turbo looked to be brand new, but had trouble getting in the right rev range for the turbo to spool.
This grey 997 GT3 RS was probably doing the best around the tight course (excluding the clubman open wheeler with the 4A-GE).
On the other hand, the turbos and GT3s totally monstered the drags! Most of these cars were turning in 11 and 12 second quarter miles, bone stock – impressive!
These two vintage cars are among my favourite Porsches at these club days, just because they have so much personality.
I managed to snap a nice shot on the way back from the end of the strip, too:
The V8 in this 1934 Chevrolet can’t have been too vintage, since it was pushing the sled down the quarter faster than a lot of 911s.
This silver R35 GT-R was consistently running 11s, and I’m told it’s boasting 600+ hp.
This red GT3’s plates didn’t leave much to the imagination…
Mint interior.
Some interested battles played out during the course of the day. For example, an E63 AMG was running extremely consistently in the 13s, which isn’t bad for a 1800+kg luxury barge. A Cayenne was also running against a variety of 911s, and was pretty successful at keeping up with the slightly older ones (not so much with the 997 GT3RS).
The red turbo that was struggling at the motorkhana earlier certainly didn’t have any issues at the drags.
It was keeping up with this heavily modified green beast:
And, to finish with, a gorgeous black-orange 997 GT3!
